Become a barber in Miami

A Director’s Guide: How to Become a Licensed Barber in South Florida

Hello, and welcome! As someone who has spent over 15 years teaching and working in this industry, I frequently speak with people who want to enter the Hallandale Beach and Greater Miami barbering market. They always ask me what it truly takes to succeed.

My answer is that the roadmap is actually very straightforward. To kickstart your new profession, you must meet four basic requirements: be at least 16 years old, complete 900 training hours at an accredited academy, finish a two-hour HIV/AIDS seminar, and pass the Florida state exam.

Let me walk you through exactly how our academy guides you through this process, and how you can avoid the classic mistakes most new barbers make.

Securing Your Spot at Our Accredited Academy

Accreditation & Success: In education, trust is everything. I am proud to say that our barbering school is officially accredited by the Commission for Independent Education and the DBPR.

When I sit down with prospective students for their mandatory entrance interview, I look for dedication. The administrative requirements to enroll are simple:

If you are transferring from another barber school, my team will evaluate your previous hours to fairly adjust the cost of your tuition and equipment. (We also offer barber classes in English, Russian, and Spanish so you can find a schedule that fits your life.)

How to Get Your Florida Barber License (BAR 1): 4 Steps

I always want my students to have a clear understanding of the licensing process. Transforming from a student to an officially licensed Florida barber involves 4 steps:

Education

You must complete a full course at a licensed school, featuring 900 hours of theory and hands-on practice. This prepares you for the written exam administered by Pearson VUE, which covers Florida regulations, theory, and sanitation.

Earn Your HIV/AIDS Safety Certificate

The state requires a 2-hour HIV/AIDS awareness course. Important: Make sure you take this course no more than 2 years prior to submitting your license application.

Pay the Fees

You will need to submit a registration fee to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). For 2026, the DBPR application fee runs approximately $75–90, while the Pearson VUE exam fee is around $46.

Get Licensed

Once you pass the test and clear the fees, you receive your official license.

Important Notes on Fees. If you are a veteran, an active-duty military member, or a military spouse, please check the DBPR website – you may be eligible for full fee waivers or discounts.

Common Mistakes New Barbers Make and How to Avoid Them

As an educator with over 15 years of experience, I see beginners make the same errors over and over. I always advise my students to follow these rules:

Prioritize Sanitation

Always disinfect tools using EPA-registered solutions. It is not just about passing inspections; it is about your client's safety.

Care for Your Tools

Keep your clippers and shears in clean, closed containers to prevent damage and contamination.

Master the Fade

Poor length transitions are a common rookie giveaway. Always start with basic hair sectioning techniques to keep your tapers clean.

Build a Safe Portfolio

Taking photos of your work is essential for marketing, but legally, you must always ask for client consent first.

Protect Your Profits

You must learn financial literacy. Operating without professional liability insurance can lead to devastating financial losses if a client files a claim.

The South Florida Barber Market: Salaries, Demand & Opportunity

I continuously monitor the industry, and the U.S. barbershop market is expanding rapidly. According to IBISWorld, the market is projected to reach $7 billion by early 2026, driven by a 9.8% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). There are now nearly 155,000 barbershops nationwide catering to clients who want personalized grooming.

Locally, barbers in the South Florida area typically earn 33,000 – 50,000 annually. Experienced professionals in this market often earn $60,000 or more — though, of course, your results will vary based on your experience, specific location, and how well you build your client base.

Q&A

Once licensed, you generally have three paths: work as an independent contractor, join an established barbershop and pay a flat chair rental fee, or eventually open your own shop. At PHABSA, my team and I don't abandon you after graduation. We provide business coaching, resume writing help, interview preparation, and job placement assistance to help you start earning quickly.

Not at all. I designed our program for complete beginners. We start with the absolute basics – like how to properly hold shears and maintain sanitation and guide you step-by-step toward complex modern techniques.

Your tuition includes a complete professional toolkit ready for use from day one. It features professional clippers, high-quality shears, straight razors, disposable blades, texturing tools, and a T-blade outliner for line-up work and fades.

The Florida state requirement is 900 hours. At our academy, this takes approximately 8 months of full-time attendance. By graduation day, you will be fully prepared for the state board exam and confident on the barbershop floor.
